Year in and year out, nursing is viewed as the most trusted profession. In order to continue to be worthy of that trust, nurses most continue to practice with foundations ethical decision making. The American Nurses Association (ANA), has developed a Code of Ethics for nurses to follow and we will briefly discuss a few of the code’s provisions. The fifth and sixth provisions highlight the nurses’ duty and loyalty to their patients. The seventh to ninth provisions highlight the nurse’s ethical duties beyond individual patient outcomes and expects nurses to collaborate with other health professionals and the public to protect human rights, promote health diplomacy, and reduce health disparities. Nurses are encouraged and expected to unite and work to change health policy, maintain integrity of the profession and promote social justice. Keep all this in mind in your practice.
